Call for Contributions to Open Education Global Conference in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

16–18 October 2023

Open Education Global and NorQuest College, hosts of the Open Education Global (OE Global) 2023 Conference that will take place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (Amiskwaciwâskahikan), from 16-18 October 2023, invite proposals for conference sessions. The theme of the Open Education Global 2023 Conference is Building a Sustainable World Through Open Education.

We welcome proposals for sessions and participants from every educational sector, such as K-12 (primary/secondary), college, university, galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs). We welcome proposals that reflect on sustainability and inclusiveness and how Open Education can support the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO’s six Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) priorities, along with other societal challenges. We encourage presentations that provide creative solutions for attaining the SDGs and presentations that focus on the relationship between Open Education, sustainability, and traditional Indigenous knowledge.

• Open initiatives in the community colleges, primary, secondary, (K-12 sectors), tertiary and professional education, gallery and museum sectors, and lifelong learning;
• The role of students, librarians, teachers, and leadership in promoting Open Education;
• Open communities of practice.
4. Research and Open Education • Recent developments and future directions in Open Education;
• Strategies for opening up research processes;
• The role of open data and access in education, and research across disciplines such as public health, climate, and biodiversity.
5. Open Education Technology and Digital Competence• Bridging the digital divide;
• Tools and technology for supporting Open Education, including the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI);
• OER Repositories: Access, accessibility, and sustainability;
• Use of technology for Open Education practices;
• Professional development and support for educators in open practices based on technology;
• Teachers’ and students’ digital competence for Open Education practices.
6. Open Education Policies, Strategies, and Capacity Building• Institutional Policies: Challenges and successes in creating open institutional policies;
• International, national, and regional open policy initiatives;
• Open policy showcase of examples and models;
• Building capacity and sustainability in Open Education.
7. Wildcard• Propose an Open Education topic (within your proposal) that does not fit within the six tracks described above.
• Creative approaches are welcome.

Session Formats

The 2023 Conference features the following session formats, which can be applied to any of the conference tracks/topics:

1. Presentations

Conference presentations by one or more authors, followed by Questions and Answers (Q&A). Time allocation: 25 min per presentation (including Q&A).

2. Lightning Talks

Quick presentations followed by Q&A.
Time allocation: 15 min per talk (including Q&A).

3. Action Labs

Action Labs are how-to sessions that can be organized in the form of a workshop. The purpose of the labs is to train participants, engage them in thoughtful discussion, provide opportunities for feedback, and incubate new projects and ideas. We welcome action lab submissions related to any of the thematic sessions above.
Time allocation: 40 OR 90 minutes (authors should specify duration in their proposals).

4. Panel Discussions

Panels are moderated sessions discussing a topic that is designed to give the audience different perspectives. Panels should focus on an interactive discussion between the panel members and the audience. A proposal for a Panel should ideally include the topics to be discussed, how the audience will be engaged in the discussion, and the expected outcomes for the session.
Time allocation: 30, 45 OR 60 minutes (authors should specify duration in their proposals).

5. Posters

We invite participants to create posters that provide a good overview of any topic or project related to Open Education. Posters will be displayed outside of conference sessions.
Format: Posters should be printed on A1 paper (841 x 594 mm).

6. Wildcard

Possibility to propose a format (in your proposal) that does not fit within those sessions described above. Creative approaches are welcome.
Time allocation: 30, 45, OR 60 minutes (authors should specify duration in their proposals).

Selection Criteria

Submissions will be reviewed based on the following criteria:

  1. Relevance: Does the submission relate to the Conference Theme or Tracks?
  2. Clarity and Coherence: Does the submission explain the aim(s) of the proposal in a clear and understandable way and in consistency with the requirement of the call?
  3. Learning Outcomes: Does the submission explain what participants can expect to learn in the session or how the session will advance their understanding of Open Education?  

Submission Process

All proposals have to be submitted in English through EasyChair.

Proposals for the Open Education Global Conference 2023 must include an abstract with 3-5 keywords (minimum 400 and maximum 500 words, including references if applicable). Authors should ensure that enough details are given to be able to assess the relevance, goals, and key takeaways of the proposed sessions.

Selected sessions, including all keynote sessions, will be live-streamed and recorded. Presentation abstracts and supporting materials will be available on the Open Education Global Connect platform.

All presenting authors must register for the conference, pay applicable registration fees and attend the in-person conference. Please note that we will not be able to support virtual presentations.    

Language Considerations

Please note that we are exploring opportunities to support sessions in additional languages during the conference, which include French, Spanish, and Cree. During your proposal submission process, please specify whether you would like to conduct your session in languages other than English.  We are endeavoring to be as inclusive as possible and look forward to creating meaningful cultural connections through multilingual sessions during the conference. However, we must consider the risk of limited participation in sessions conducted in languages other than English if we cannot support translations. Please indicate if you would also be prepared to present in English.

Submission Requirements

Please note – you will need to provide the following information during the submission process:

  • Names, titles, and affiliations for all presenters and /or facilitators
  • Educational sector: Primary Education or Secondary Education (K-12), Community, Vocational, or Education College, Higher Education, University, Lifelong Learning, Non-formal learning, Adult learning, Community learning, and/or Indigenous Community.
  • Conference Track (selected from the list above)
  • Format of session requested (selected from the list above)
  • Title of the session
  • Abstract (400–500 words) including references if applicable. Please specify the word count in your abstract.
  • At least 3–5 keywords to accompany the abstract
  • Session language preferences/requirements (English, French, Spanish, and Cree). You can select two options.
  • Learning Outcomes or Key Takeaways. What can participants expect to learn? How will they be engaged? How will the session advance their understanding of Open Education? (100–200 words)
